The WVT is mainly concerned with area of the former Wensum Valley Project. This is a strip of countryside, approximately 30 miles long and mostly about 2 miles wide, that follows the River Wensum from its headwaters near West Rudham, Tatterset and South Raynham in West Norfolk down to central Norwich. Including the flood plain, the valley sides and some of the higher plateau land, its unspoilt landscape and wildlife habitats contrast with the more intensively farmed countryside to the north and south of it. For descriptions of the landscape character, go to Character of the Landscape.
However, in order to achieve some of its objectives, for instance by conserving wetland and river habitats, the WVT may work beyond the former Project area, in the wider Wensum catchment. The River Wensum catchment area is all the land which drains into the River Wensum, and includes a large part of central Norfolk.
The former Project area also encompasses the main tributary valleys of the Tat (near Tatterford), the Cat (near Kettlestone), the Whitewater or Wendling Beck (near Dereham), the Blackwater (near Reepham) and part of the Tud (in Costessey).
Major settlements associated with the Wensum Valley are Fakenham, Lenwade, Taverham, Drayton, Costessey, Hellesdon and Norwich. Dereham and Reepham are also within the River Wensum catchment.
