A bike ride is an enjoyable way to see the beautiful landscapes, wildlife, picturesque villages and mills of the Wensum Valley.
We have produced two leaflets on cycling through the valley using pleasant country lanes. One covers cycling in the Upper and Lower Wensum Valley, the other covers the mid-Wensum Valley. The mid-valley leaflet is currently out of stock but you can contact us for a copy of upper/lower leaflet. To get best use of the leaflet, please also refer to the relevant ordnance survey maps.
Our ‘Green Spaces near Norwich’ leaflet explains how to reach attractive parts of the Wensum Valley on foot or by bike from Norwich. It describes a range of woodlands, lakes, marshes and riverside access easily reached from Norwich City centre, covering the valley from Norwich to Taverham. Contact us for a copy.
The disused Midland & Great Northern railway network is now known as the Marriott’s Way. This is a traffic-free trail and is hard surfaced from Norwich (Barn Road roundabout) to Aylsham (21 miles), passing through the Wensum Valley at Norwich, Hellesdon, Drayton, Taverham, Attlebridge and
Lenwade.
The
exact route can be found on the Norfolk County Council Countryside Access website where you can also print out the map in sections. Alternatively you can contact us for a (less detailed) leaflet. The route is also marked on relevant Ordnance Survey Maps, available from bookshops and tourist information
centres.
Local railway enthusiast Peter Boggis has written an account of 4 cycle rides he and his son took on the Marriott’s Way in the 1990s, with interesting historical notes and observations. Please note since the accounts were written there have been some changes such as upgrading of the path surface.
This leaflet describes a 13 mile (21km) circular route taking in attractive villages and picturesque countryside in the Ringland area, starting and ending at Taverham. The leaflet includes fascinating historical notes on the villages and landscape the route passes through, including Attlebridge, Weston Longville, Morton, and of course Taverham and Ringland.
It is one in a series of cycling and walking leaflets published by Broadland District Council. Contact them on 01603 431133 for a copy.
Amongst other things, SUSTRANS (the sustainable transport charity) designates the National Cycle Network. Cycle Route 1 runs through parts of the valley from Fakenham to Norwich. Maps can be viewed and printed on the SUSTRANS website.
